Homer of the Month May 2007

Who: Ron Coomer

What: After being offered a contract extension by the Timberwolves, Sid Hartman stated this about Coach Randy Whitman, “He’ll do a good job from the start-believe me!”

Mark Rosen grabbed his softball and lobbed a flurry of rhetorical questions at Viking coach Brad Childress on his Sunday night recap show.

Dave Lee shined up Colts coach Tony Dungy with this statement, “The whole country should live like Tony Dungy”.

Paul Allen bootlicked the Vikings management by declaring, “I don’t think a fan of the team could ask more from the Wilf family.”

Jim Peterson brought up some ancient history by complimenting Kevin McHale for letting go of J.R. Rider.

Gopher Illustrated writer Zach Johnson (Who?) sold hope to Gopher football fans by suggesting they may finish with a 9-3 record in the upcoming 2007 season.

To no one’s surprise Dave Mona said, “I think history will treat him quite well” in reference to former Gopher coach Glen Mason after Sid Hartman suggested he was never given the credit he deserved.

Star/Tribune writer Joe Christiansen suggested one reason the Twins may have faltered vs. Oakland in last years playoffs was due to not having enough time to compose themselves after winning the division.  His paper (Star/Tribune) also reached to the local angle of the Stanley Cup Finals by “informing” readers that four of their prospects have Minnesota ties.

We must give the nod to one of the many FSN North talking heads that sold hope early in the month before turning to hype as the team began to turn it around.  April’s Homer of the Month Dick Bremer described a Morneau home run as “majestic”.  Anthony LaPanta, Marney Gellner, and Bert Blyleven contributed multiple homerish comments as well.  However it was former Twin Ron Coomer that nabbed the H.O.M.  After a good initial pitching performance by Scott Baker, Ron was grinning ear to ear as he proceeded to cheese it up with Marney and used the word “awesome” three times in an eight second period.

Bottom Line: You can count on the Friendly Sports Network to hit their stride this summer even if the Twins do not.
