Homer of the Month October 2007

Who: Greg Coleman

Self anointed “great football mind” Paul Allen refused to give an opinion on Vikings Head Coach Brad Childress while the team struggled to a 2-4 record.  He also reiterated that he believed this team was better than the 2006 offering.  Finally, after a caller asked about the future of WR Troy Williamson he said, “I’m happy where Troy is at”.

Not surprisingly Sid Hartman said he was confident the Gophers would defeat the NDSU Bison.  He and fellow columnist Charley “Shooter” Walter both speculated that Joe Mauers brother Jake could ultimately become the Twins manager.

Pete Bercich defended Viking tackle Bryant McKinney’s inconsistent play with this observation, “he’s got a lot of heat on him”.

Anthony LaPanta of FSN North evoked the name Joe Montana when describing Eden Prairie QB Ryan Grants “pin point passes”.

Mark Rosen called former Twin Kirby Puckett “the pied piper of Minnesota sports”. He also kissed up to Tubby Smith with this:  “Tubby will have a great connection with the college kids – gonna love him”.

New Gopher football coach Tim Brewster was given some serious rope by Jeff Dubay with his “can’t judge this guy for three to four years…that is minimum” declaration.

We were informed that KFAN’s Joe Anderson really played the hope card by speculating the Vikings could win the rest of their games after the Chargers contest (must have been a bit).

Runner Up:  In discussing the 2006 Gopher-Bison football game, Sid Hartman said, "I don’t remember how exactly the game ended last year.”  His Sunday morning partner Dave Mona (and Gopher color analyst) had a convenient case of amnesia by replying, “Yes, I don’t either” about the blocked field goal that preserved an embarrassing 10-9 Gopher win.

Winner:  Vikings sideline analyst Greg Coleman jock sniffed Tarvaris Jackson by suggesting his performance has paralleled that of Donovan McNabb’s at a similar stage in their careers.  For the record McNabb threw for 3365 yards, 21 touchdowns, made the Pro Bowl, and was runner-up in the MVP voting in his second season.

Bottom Line: Another example of someone simply trying too hard.
