After enjoying a redshirt year off near the beautiful Greek coast, Homer and his staff have returned. In the interim a few things appear to have changed while others remain painfully static regarding the coverage of Minnesota sports.
One change for the positive appears to be the work of Jim Souhan. He has grown to assess the locals in a more discerning manner. Whether with Patrick Reusse on KSTP radio, writing a column for the Star/Tribune , or watching him cringe while FNS’s Anthony Lapanta loves up the Twins/Timberwolves after a bad loss, he has become a refreshing observer of the local sports scene. A classic radio moment on 1500 KSTP was Souhan calling Paul Allen and his fellow KFAN Viking apologists “idiots”.
We also want to acknowledge Patrick Reusse for this recent blog that nails it regarding the intense jock-sniffing permeating the Twin Cities market:

Now for the September Homer of the Month:
“Something called” Kevin Gorg made an attempt to snatch the honor on the last day of September with this hope selling declaration about the Wild: “I think their set up for a lot of success down the road”. However the emphasis of most homerrific takes relate to the Golden Gopher football program. Although hyped less than we expected, the inauguration of TCF Stadium brought out some predictable overly optimistic takes from many sources. KFAN’s college football “expert” and former Gopher Justin Konzemius predicted a gopher win over highly ranked California despite his former alma mater being taken to OT by a mediocre Syracuse team. Darren “Doogie” Wolfson contributed this gem in one of his blogs stating the Gophers have “a defense full of playmakers” prior to giving up 35 points to Cal-Berkley. Gopher protectionists Dave Lee, Dave Mona, and new host of “The Tim Brewster Show” Dean Dalton also forwarded a number of provincial gopher opinions. However this month’s award goes to a newcomer to this site. Gopher Illustrated writer Zach Johnson gets the nod for his preview of the Gopher-Cal game. He wrote that the game could be “a preview of the Rose Bowl”…enough said. |
